There are 2 ways to mount fisheye lens to your S90, first you need a lens adapter, 2 options here.
a) Quick-Change Filter Holder by Lensmate or b) RN-9 Lens Adapter which you can get over at ebay.
After days of research, i decided to go with option B. The filter holder by lensmate felt a little flimsy as its just glued onto the camera. Anything that i mount on it COULD drop anytime right? Well, thats what i thought, but the RN-9 adapter allows me to screw the adapter onto the camera itself. I felt somewhat “safer”.
However the not-so-great part about the RN-9 adapter is that its bulky and big. Anyways, after ordering it over ebay, a week later the RN-9 arrived. Its solid and well worth the price (under USD20)
Next, get yourself a fisheye lens, there are heaps to choose from, depending on your preference and budget really. Theres Vivitar, Opteka, cheap China / Hong Kong brands etc…all easily obtained over ebay. I didnt have to go out to any shops
Heres some tips before you buy the fisheye:
- remember that the mount ring is 37mm, try to avoid getting step up or step down rings, it will affect sharpness around the image
- fisheye / wideangle lens comes with numbers like 0.35x, 0.21x, 0.25x, 0.42x etc….the smaller the number, the higher the “curve” / more extreme fisheye its going to be
- cheap fisheye lens from Hong Kong on ebay comes with free shipping worldwide
the S90 isnt as slim and sleek anymore!
Conclusion: I’m pretty satisfied with the overall outcome, having spend less than USD60 overall, the built for the adapter is excellent and im surprised too with the quality of the fisheye lens, it felt heavier than expected. Only thing now, with this setup, the S90 is kinda bulky and wont fit into pocket.

Hi, the price range from USD60 and above depending where you buy and what brands i suppose?
[...] why one should get a fisheye lens, not necessarily only on a Canon S90, but you can set up one for yourself on handphones, lomo, diana, and [...]
Hi
is randomly lead to your post and found that its helpful;
gain a little more info from u.
Mind if u ask a few question? i’m so new to all these.
err.. as u mention in ur article
“try to avoid getting step up or step down rings”
so.. whats a step up or a step down ring? how would it be? or how is it like? :X
have you ever tried using lensmate adapter?
and hows ur RN-9 adapter going?
any feedback from u?
Jeffrey> step up rings look like this : http://images04.olx.com.ph/ui/4/61/61/49496061_2-step-up-ring-Manila.jpg
because the adapter mount ring size is 37mm, if you have other lens that has a bigger mount ring than 37mm, you will need a “step up” ring.
no, i have not used a lensmate, but my personal opinion, lensmate uses sticker to glue the adaptor to the camera. however the RN-9 adapter is screwed on to the tripod screw, making it much more stable i feel.
RN-9 built is GREAT and solid. however its “bulky” once its attached onto the S90 sleek camera. Which means you wont be able to snug the S90 into your pocket, but i suppose these are sacrifices you gotta make when you wanna “add on”
hope these helps, good luck!
oki i think i get what u mean..
thx for the tips.
:X i was thinking getting a lensmate tho.
but i might be changing my mind. :X
btw is ebay safe for redeem? i never tried to buy anything on9 yet so far..
hey jeffrey, well, ebay has worked for me so far

btw, i’ve got a couple of enquiries if i’m selling the adapter & lens.
I could do a bulk order. If i can get 5 orders I’ll do it.
RN-9 Adapter + Fisheye Lens : RM235 per set.
Location : Petaling Jaya, Selangor pick up at the moment.
but what type of fisheye lens? is it the 1 shown in your photo?
yes, exactly the same as what you see in my post
i think should be ok for me.
but.. i dont think i can make it for the pick up.
how bout postage perhaps? cause im from kuching.
i wish i could pick up tho; more safe.. and could avoid breakage from those postman.
btw; any idea why some certain fisheye lens image dont have black edge? and some do?
do you have more sample photos with your fisheye on? is there significant softening around the edges, and it is really that bad bcoz i have come across reviews saying so abt cheap fisheye lenses.
@Jeffrey,the black edges are caused when you soom in (or zoom out), i cant remember which is which..hehe…so, basically, when you zoom out, your lens goes back, thus seeing more of the black edges or create the round circle shape. It also depends on the “magnification” of the lens you buy, wide angle lens will not have that black edge, but maybe minor vignetting. fish eye lens (an extreme of wide angle lens) will definitely have the black edge. Hope that explains
@Bean, well, depends how fussy you are about the softening. You do have to remember that these are 3rd party lens from China / HongKong, and cost less than USD80. They definitely wont give you super sharp images.
For other samples, you can view them here (take note of the second image & the last 2 images. you can see the softening / blur at the edges) : http://qwertysays.com/2010/06/sneak-peak-whatisinsidecommy/
yeap thx; ur helpful.
hm.. just look for me @ facebook if you can match up to numbers.
or here. I’ll check b your post again. =)
would definitely buy from you before i change my mind. :X
Question, what does the macro adapter do? I’m thinking about getting this one (http://www.amazon.com/Vivitar-21-37-21X-Fisheye-Lens/dp/B002R6Q0N6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1280714188&sr=1-1) but I think theres a macro lens already inside is what one review said.
Hi, Could you please post an image with the camera zoomed in so it just about cuts off the black edges like a non circular fisheye? Is it easy to focus?
Thanks for a great tutorial.
Sam
Hey Sam, sorry for the delayed reply. Focusing is easy peasy, just like autofocus on S90. Zooming in is also not a problem, your image will look pretty normal, just slightly “wide” angle.
dear all, i have one more set of this adapter + fish eye lens up for grabs, message me if you’re interested
What fish eye lens is that in the pictures? Is that 0.45x? thanks
Hey. I have several qns on the fisheye lens and adapter. the fisheye lens come with a macro lens too? how does it work?
Is it easy to remove and setup? And can I still zoom in and out smoothly after setup?
Oh, one more thing. Do you ship overseas? I’m situated in Singapore
